EAGG Meeting October 2nd

'PLANTS AS POLLINATORS' by Lynne Moore

Chamberlin Hall was buzzing at the first EAGG meeting for fifteen months, and it was fun to welcome old friends and see new faces.  Lynne Moore, whose family run the nursery Moore and Moore which specialises in plants for shady places, gave an interesting talk on Plants as Pollinators. She was asked about how to deal with slugs, vine weevil and much else which so many of us have been plagued with this year, and here is her recipe for garlic wash.

 Garlic Wash Recipe

Although ‘ready made’ solutions are available its very easy to make your own which is far cheaper. The diluted solution can be sprayed on vulnerable plants, e.g. Hosta or watered into the soil. Owners of a Hosta nursery say that it can also prohibit the growth of vine weevil larvae when watered into the soil, or pot plants are soaked in the solution.

Here is what to do:

  1. take two full bulbs of garlic, unpeeled and intact, and place in a saucepan with 2 litres of water.

  2. boil until the bulbs are soft. This can be quite smelly so make sure the extractor fan is working or open the windows.

  3. when soft, mash the bulbs with a fork or potato masher to extract the maximum garlic juide from the bulbs

  4. sieve the mixture. Discard any pulp, skin etc. and keep the resulting cloudy liquid. This will be your concentrate.

  5. dilute 2 tablespoons of this concentrate to 5 litres of water in a sprayer or watering can

  6. spray or water your vulnerable plants once a week. More frequent applications will be required in wet weather.
