Ed Berger - Herbs for Health

Ed Berger - Herbs for Health

Saturday 3rd November 2022 at Monks Eleigh Village Hall.

It was unanimously agreed that Ed was an engaging, knowledgeable, interesting and excellent speaker. He has been an experienced herbal therapist for 25 years and teacher of herbal medicine for 20 years. He was originally inspired by the Ayurvedic healing system of India, and went on to obvtain a BSc in Western Herbal Medicine and also trained in Naturopathic Iridology, practicing ever since. Combining a thorough grounding in orthodox medical diagnosis and evidence based herbal medicine with the traditional energetic approaches of Ayurveda and Chinese Medicine and a sound grasp of horticulture and botany, this knowledge came through during his talk.

It was interesting to hear that so many of the herbs that we grow without thinking in our gardens, and the way we use them in cooking, garnishes, teas and infusions have their roots so far back in history, and how cultures have evolved in so many different parts of the world to the same end result. For instance using herbs in cooking was a way of prescribing herbs without being accused of witch craft. Unlike modern medicines that have evolved to treat problems, herbs were used to fend off those problems and build up the bodies natural defenses in order to avoid serious illness. Knowing the horrible ravages Alzheimers can have on a person, preventative remedies to help the cognitive functions of the brain with Rosemary and Sage infusions seem fundamental. Perhaps this is a subject we should pay more attention to paticularly now, with increased resistence to modern drugs and the recent experience of the pandemic and fear of more to come. Ed gave us many examples of the essential healing power of herbs commonly grown and found in the hedgerows.

Ed came across as a passionate plantsman and he grows a wide variety of herbal medicines in his woodland garden in Suffolk. He was genereous in sharing his knowledge with us and stressed that he is always happy to discuss any problems, questions, or any particular herbs we might have in our gardens so please do email him at info@edberger.co.uk He also has a clinic in Melton, Woodbridge.
