Visit to BRIDGES, WOOLPIT IP30 9SA
EAGG is paying a return visit to Bridges, the delightful garden of Michael Elles and Stanley Bates at Woolpit, Suffolk. Hidden behind a row of cottages in the main street, is a surprisingly large area which the owners have planted and expanded over thirty years. There are peonies and roses, both familiar and unusual, a sumptuous white wisteria, a walled garden, a vegetable plot, and informal areas with ancient fruit trees, and cutting flowers. Strong architectural features include the Shakespeare garden enclosed by high beech hedges, where over seven thousand crocus make a spring carpet, and in summer the borders of the Kew Garden rose frame the bust of Shakespeare. The Umbrello pavilion designed by Michael Elles, provides a sheltered view towards Shakespeare.
If you have been before you’ll know it’s a garden full of inspiration tended by a talented plantsman. the visit includes a tour of the garden with Michael, and tea. Please book early as numbers are limited.
